Why We Still Choose the Flowers Ourselves Every Morning

There’s a quiet moment most people never see in a florist’s day.

Before the first customer walks in, before the phone starts ringing, someone is standing in front of the day’s delivery deciding which blooms will make it onto the bench. Not every stem is equal. Some have better form. Some are further open. Some simply feel right for the arrangements we know we’ll be making that day.

At Adrienne’s Flowers we still do this ourselves. It’s not the fastest way to work, and it isn’t the most scalable. But after fifteen years of doing it this way, we’re convinced it matters.

Flowers are living things. They arrive with their own character depending on the season, the weather, and how they’ve travelled. A rose that looks perfect on a wholesale photo can be a different proposition once it’s in your hands. The same goes for seasonal British flowers, imported blooms, and everything in between. Choosing carefully at the start means the finished bouquet or tribute has a better chance of looking and lasting the way it should.

This is especially true for the arrangements that matter most. A funeral tribute that needs to feel personal. A wedding bouquet that has to hold its shape through a long day. A last-minute “I’m thinking of you” bouquet that still needs to feel considered rather than thrown together. In each case, the quality of the individual stems makes a noticeable difference.

We’ve never wanted to become the kind of florist that simply fulfils generic orders from a catalogue. The shop in Ropa Court is small enough that we can still care about the details. The family who work here — Adrienne, her daughters, and the rest of the team — all understand that the difference between an average arrangement and a good one often starts with what was chosen that morning.

It’s not glamorous work. It’s just the foundation everything else is built on.
